Attendance Policies and Procedures

Students need to arrive at the school in the morning at 7:40 a.m. And in their seats ready to learn at 7:50 a.m. If your child arrives later than this time, they must check in at the office before going to class.

If your child will be absent because of illness or a doctor appointment, please call the school by 10:00 a.m. and let us know your child's name, grade and the reason for the absence. To reach the attendance office after normal school hours, you may call 855-4375. Leave your child's name, grade and the reason for the absence on the recorder. You must call the office for each day your student misses school.

Homework Requests

If your child misses 3 days in a row, you may request homework from their teachers through the office. Please call before 10:00 a.m. to have the homework ready to pick up by 3:30 p.m.

If you need to take your child out of school before the end of the school day, you'll need to come into the office and sign them out. If they plan to return to school that day, they will need to sign in upon their return.

Please refer to the Student-Parent Handbook for more detailed information about attendance procedures.

Prearranged Absences

If you need to schedule a pre-arranged absence from school for your child, you must notify the attendance secretary, Ms. Myers, either by calling the school at 855-4375, or by sending a signed note to school with your child. Your child will then be given a form to take to each of their classes, and the teachers will list the upcoming assignments. Remember, all pre-arranged absences must be verified with the attendance secretary by a parent. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Withdrawal Procedures

Please notify our registrar, Mrs. Nelson, if you plan on withdrawing your student from LHMS. Your student will need to attend a full day of school to complete the process. This is important so that records can be forwarded to the new school. Mrs. Nelson can be reached at 855-4375.

Telephone Policy

Office phones are available for students' use in emergency situations.  Please be assured that any student who needs to make an emergency call will always be allowed to use the office phone.  Missed busses, after school rides not showing up, etc. are considered emergencies.  Calling to ask permission to go home with a friend is not considered an emergency.

Please review this issue with your student.  We appreciate your help in this matter.

Transportation Concerns

We would like to take this opportunity to review some important issues regarding the buses, parking etc. Our goal at LHMS is to keep all of our students safe and sound, and we thank you in advance for your help!

BLUE CURBS
We have been experiencing problems with people parking along the blue curb in the front parking lot of the school. The blue-curbed areas aer for the handicap buses only. Please do not park in the blue curb areas. We thank you for your cooperation in this most important issue.

BUS AREAS
We also ask parents to use the FRONT PARKING LOT ONLY when dropping off or picking up students. The east side of the building is reserved for school buses. Cars pulling in and out, students and parents out of cars, morning darkness, and large school buses all in the same place creates a dangerous situation for students. There have been a few close calls already this year, and soon there will be slippery conditions to deal with as well. So please remember to drop your students off in the front parking lot only - Thank you!

BUS PROCEDURES
There has been some concern express about the amount of time the students have to get to their bus at the end of the day. It is District transportation practice to give the students 7 minutes after the last bell to get on their bus. After 7 minutes, the buses begin to pull away. For safety reasons, when the first bus starts to pull away, all other buses close their doors, even if a student has just reached their bus. Students trying to make it onto their bus once any of the buses have begun moving creates a safety concern. While 7 minutes is not a long time, it should be sufficient for students to go to their lockers and get onto their bus. Students stopping to talk to other students, trying to make impromptu after school plans, etc., account for most incidents of students missing their bus. We hop this helps to clarify this issue. If you have further concerns, you may reach District Transportation at 888-7910.

Lost & Found

Lost and found is located in the main office. If your child is missing something, they can come by and have a look. All unclaimed items will be picked up by the Idaho Youth Ranch. Happy Hunting!

Notes from the Kitchen Staff

The lunchroom has only a limited amount of change to make for students who request it. Please send your child to school with $1 dollar bills rather than $5's if at all possible, as the machines will only take $1's. Thank you!

Snow Days

Occasionally, the Meridian School District will need to cancel school due to weather conditions. School closures are declared after consultation with law enforcement and highway officials. If school closure is necessary, the media will be informed as soon as possible. You can tune into your local radio station or television station if you think there may be a possibility of a school closure. Please make sure that you have a plan for your child in the event school should be closed.

Locker Problems

Some students are being tardy to class or missing their bus due to troublesome lockers. If any student is consistently having problems with their locker, he/she needs to come into the office during the day and a custodian will check it out for them.
